We are now in Fiji, having crossed the International Dateline and completely
wiping out a whole Thursday in the process (wish we could do that to Mondays
back home! ). We are in Nadi now, having just left Beachcomber
Island after 5 days of top sunbathing! A hard place to describe - but
basically the Island takes about 10 mins to walk around, has great snorkelling,
and is termed a "barefoot" island i.e. you do not wear shoes or sandals for
your entire stay! Even the bar is a sand floor (very tricky after a few Fiji
Bitters!) We met some great people there too - all of them we will be meeting
again on our tours. Much eating and drinking too - with Tracey winning no
less than 3 seperate competitions whilst there - one from the 41st International
Crab Race where Tracey had successfully bid for the crab from Russia called
(appropriately enough for her) "Vodka" ! FIJI$200 the richer for it! We are
off to explore the Coral coast tomorrow, down to Sigatoka and fly out to Auckland
next Wednesday.
Just back from the Coral Coast. Another interesting experience involving
cheap hostel accomodation, lots of insect friends, and one rather large rat!
All at the sunny Vakaviti
surf shack! Came home via Sigatoka where the annual Bili Bili races were being
held. This is really rather like the school sports day, but for all the staff
of the big resorts on the main island of Viti Levu. Also had a minor misunderstanding
where we thought we'd stop and help a tourist who clearly looked like he had
been run over by the way he was being attended, but was in actual fact a very
unfit, very cramped, and very last competitor of the Bili Bili road race!!!!
We hope we were of some comfort to him! Then, just as we enter Nadi, we are
reminded that things still aren't 100% stable here as we past machine gun
emplacements guarding the main road in. Still, the heavily armed soldiers
still shout 'Bula' to you with the same chirpiness as anybody else!
